The Arkenstone

Detail view of a 30 mm cavity in rhyolite with probable spherical siderite coated with micro spherical chalcedony and secondary calcite overgrowth, self collected. Typical "boxworks" developed by the weathering of massive sulfide ore deposits in the oxidation and leaching zone. Most of the ore elements have been leached and redeposited further down in the deposit leaving a mixture of iron oxides/hydroxides and silica minerals.
Origin: Powell property, Upper Beechmont, Numinbah Valley, Queensland, Australia
Sample size: field of view 8 mm
Sample owner: Vic Cloete
