Sample size: 1.5 x 1 cm specimen of
zincite
(red) with rare manganosite (green) grains
This cabinet specimen has very large crystallized grains in excess of 1 cm -
actually up to 1.3 cm across! This is larger than the book on Långban reported
being found. Manganosite is a simple oxide of manganese which is deep green on
fresh surfaces and then tend to alter to
manganite,
pyrochroite or some other form of manganese oxide. This specimen has
matrix comprised of
calcite
which fluoresces under SW UV light. Though not a rare species at Långban the
size of the grains is quite exceptional. Ex.
Harry von Eckermann Collection
This specimen of
calcite
hosts abundant grains of
hausmannite and scattered grains of deep green manganosite. Most of the
surface manganosite has oxidized to a deep black though one area protected
still reveals the deep green color. Ex. Frank Edwards Collection
