Origin: Ilfeld, nr. Nordhausen, Thuringa, Germany (type locality)

Sample size: 5.7 x 5 x 3.8 cm (top), 12.5 x 6 x 6 cm (2nd row), 6.5 x 5 x 2.4 cm (bottom)

 

  

  

This specimen of calcite has some extraordinary sharp crystals of lustrous jet black manganite on calcite. Von Eckermann used the term "Sfenomananit" in reference to the sphene shaped (bladed) crystal habit.
