Barysilite
Masses of pink platy crystals embedded in matrix, XRD confirmed
Origin: Franklin, Sussex Co., New Jersey, United States
Sample size: 4 x 4 x 4 cm
Tiny pearly white, flat lying, platy crystals covering most of fracture.
Origin: Långban, Varmland, Sweden
Sample size: 3 x 2 x 2.3 cm (top), 5.5 x 3 x 3 cm (bottom)
This specimen has a zone of mineralization where native
lead and
copper
have been altered to a potpourri of mineral species! Barysilite occurs as
thin, colourless hexagonal plate shaped crystals - both as isolated and and
clumped groups. The largest crystals are about 2 mm across. Also present are
native
lead
with
hydrocerussite alterations and there may be some native
copper
still with alteration products of green
malachite
and jet black
tenorite.
Lastly are found tabular shaped crystals of
nadorite.
It is not clear where in the mine this specimen was found but the Flink
lineage supports a possibility of it coming from the Japan or Lukas workings.

This specimen was found on the dumps by the famous Långban collector Roland
Eriksson. The rock is comprised of
hematite
with a minor
magnetite
component,
garnet
and
calcite.
There is a 2.3 x 1.6 cm area (exposed vug) that is very heavily mineralized
with crystals of barysilite. The crystals are thin bladed hexagonal in shape
and reach up to about 1.5 mm across. There are literally hundreds of them on
this specimen.
