Reflected/transmitted colour: red in thin splinters, otherwise opaque, polished section light to blackish gray with a creamy tint, internal reflections occurs in places as blood-red, but not as abundant as in proustite or cinnabar

Pleochroism: weak

Optical isotropy/anisotropy: biaxial, polished section strong anisotropic, dark violet to light green-gray (nicols not completely crossed)

Refractive indices: n ≥ 2.72

Birefringence δ/bireflectance: polished section distinct creamy gray to creamy brown with a violet tint
