Reflected/transmitted colour: opaque, polished section bright white with a pinkish tint, traces of tellurium change the colour from white to purple. Extremely fine-grained galena is much darker than course-grained galena, tan to gray

Optical isotropy/anisotropy: isotropic, polished section isotropic, a weak anomalous anisotropy is not uncommon, medium gray to gray-black
